A Mi-Ki (Me-Key) is a cherished toy breed. The Mi-Ki Dogs average 5-8 pounds as adults. The Mi-Ki Puppies and Mi-Ki Dogs are very loving, intelligent, affectionate, calm, and have a quiet demeanor. The Mi-Ki Dogs get along wonderfully with cats, dogs, children through adults, and they have a personality of a large dog in this tiny body. The Mi-Ki Puppies and Mi-Ki Dogs have hair instead of fur, which makes shedding minimal. They may also be litter box trained. Sounds too good to be true, I know. But believe me, these Mi-Ki are the most precious little things going. Everyone that has a Mi-Ki cherishes it with all their heart, and always wants another. They're very addictive.
- The breed was introduced in the USA in the late 1980’s. Origin stories vary, but DNA tells us Mi-Ki's share common ancestry with several Asian breeds, predominantly the Shih Tzu, Maltese & Pekingese. Other contributing breeds in smaller percentages are Pomeranian, Yorkie & Papillon.
- Mi-Kis are purebred dogs. They are not hybrid or designer dogs. They have been bred Mi-Ki to Mi-Ki since the late 1980’s. In 2009, the Mi-Ki’s unique, identifying, genetic markers were identified by Mars Veterinary.
- Weights range from 3 – 10 pounds. The average adult weighs 4 – 8 pounds.
- Mi-Ki's are great companion dogs, happy, loving and sweet.
- They enjoy excellent health in the purebred lines.
- Mi-Ki's are very intelligent and easy to train.
- They are happy in condos and apartments. Walks aren’t necessary but your Mi-Ki will enjoy a walk or a run if you wish.
- They are hypoallergenic and low to non shedding. Because they are single coated and have hair instead of fur, many people who are allergic to dog hair or dander experience no allergic reaction around Mi-Ki's.
- Mi-Ki's love kids, cats and dogs of all sizes. Even so, they won’t mind being the only pet. Their easy going, gentle personalities allow them to be a part of almost any home.
- Color marking patterns are either parti or solid.
- Colors include cream, red, silver, black, white, blue, apricot, sable, gold, brown, beige, tan, chocolate, brindle, fawn and mahogany. Puppies will often change color before they reach adulthood.
- There are two coat types, long and smooth. Smooth coats do not have a beard or mustache and body hair is shorter and requires almost no grooming. Both coat types feature a heavily plumed tail curved over the back.
- Coat texture can be silky or cottony. Silky lies close to the body and requires very little grooming Cottony has a puffy, fuller look, mats easier and requires more grooming. Cottony coats are still easy to maintain with regular combing or brushing.
- Ear settings can be erect (up), drop (down) or folded (winged). Occasionally, during the teething months, a puppy will have each of their ears in a different ear set for a time. By maturity, both ears should be in the same ear set. All Mi-Ki's have mobile and expressive ears.
- Mi-Ki's live into their teens.
